Doula Postpartum Support

Helping you rest, recover and feel confident in your new role as a parent.

The first weeks with your baby are a time of excitement but also extreme exhaustion!

The postpartum period is a unique time in a parents life. The birth you have been building towards and waiting for is behind you and the new chapter begins. For many new parents it is a roller coaster of excitement paired with extreme exhaustion. It is a time you learn many new skills doing something you may know little about. Being a parent! Many women, and fathers alike, experience a real sense of overwhelm during the first weeks with their new baby.

Why wouldn’t you invest In your recovery?

This little human being that has entered your life suddenly becomes the centre of your world and changes everything. The start of a parenting journey is usually nothing like as romantic as we are led to believe on instagram and not many people are prepared for it. Instead it can feel like a crash course in mountain climbing and sometimes the journey up that mountain just seems like too much of a steep learning curve and even more so with the lack of sleep that comes with having a newborn.

What is postpartum doula? Isn’t she just a glorified babysitter?

You COULD say that BUT the difference is that it has little to do with parents getting time to do something for fun and all to do with their well being. If I were just a glorified baby sitter then I am an expensive one, you are paying for my knowledge and expertise, the comfort of having emotional support and someone focused on your rest and recovery.

Imagine having someone around who makes it her business to make sure you rest, who cares for your baby while you have a shower and wash your hair, who makes sure you drink enough, who fills the fridge with healthy snacks and soup for your nourishment, who helps you with tips when you are stuck with a baby issue and puts a load in the washing machine. Just imagine how that would feel.

It is all about YOUR wellbeing:

  • I will help you:
    • Gain confidence as a new parent
    • Learn tools & methods for baby care
    • Recover your physical energy
    • Process the emotional transition you are going through

You can expect support for your individual needs:

  • Support may include:
    • Baby care: Tips and tricks for happier parents
    • Help with creating a plan to meet yours and the baby’s feeding and sleep needs.
    • Light home chores. Laundry yes!
    • Preparing snacks & light meals.
    • I love to make you a cup of tea and talk about how you’re feeling.
    • Taking care of the baby while you get some well-deserved sleep.
    • Limited care of other children.

But what about the kraamzorg?

In The Netherlands we have the awesome service of the kraamzorg in the first 8 days postpartum. Often you don’t get to choose your individual kraamzorg. When kraamzorg is a good experience its amazing but sometimes there is little personal connection and the experience is not as beneficial as it could have been. YOU CHOOSE YOUR POSTPARTUM DOULA so you know you have a personal connection with her and will get the support you need.

When can I start?

Postpartum doula care can start whenever you feel the need for that extra support during your fourth trimester. Many women struggle in the week after the kraamzorg has left and like to start during the second week. Postpartum support can be booked anytime during the first 6 weeks postpartum.

Sometimes there is a reason and a family requires support beyond the 6 weeks. Under special circumstances like health issues, physical restrictions or the emotional needs of the mother, I can give postpartum support up to 12 weeks post birth.

Price is €40 per hour with a minimum of 4 consecutive hours per day.

Minimum required hours in total is 16. How you spread the hours over a day(s) is negotiable.

The Fun Stuff

I love many music genres but Big band is a favourite. I also have a soft spot for musicals. Don’t judge me for that. I don’t like to watch movies twice or start them half way through. There are a whole bunch of films that came out when the boys were small that I never saw the end of because for years I couldn’t stay awake to the end of a film!!

When I am not supporting expecting and new parents you may find me baking or cooking, both of which I love. My favourite dessert is cheesecake although my good friends know I am very picky and a definite cheesecake snob. Best cheesecake I ever had was yes.. in Paris! True story 🙂 I am even crazier about roasted vegetables and will eat them like candy. You can wake me up for Tony Chocolony’s caramel & sea salt chocolate because salt… Oh I love salt.

I love to travel with my husband and love to be out in rugged nature. I grew up in Cornwall in SW England and love the coast and moors of my youth.

I am co-founder of Birth in Holland serving the english speaking community with a passion, teaching The Confident Birth Course and other courses together with my midwife colleagues, Elinor and Martha  and my doula partner, Farola.

I am a doula trainer at InBloei teaching and mentoring new doula’s.

The Passion

In 2010 I left catering behind me to follow my passion for women and birth. I trained as a doula and have been working ever since supporting families during this amazingly unique time in their lives.

I love supporting women and seeing them find a strength they never knew they had during the labour process, and seeing them become mothers. I love supporting the partners and helping them discover how they can best support the process so together they can have the best birthing experience possible and the best start for their family. I love that moment they look at each other and their eyes triumphantly say “We did it!”

The process of labour and birth looks different for everyone and that makes my work interesting and very rewarding.

My doula work is beautifully complimented by my passion to document the birth. I fell in love with birth photography when it became popular and available on social media in 2009. My passion grew from that love and a desire to give the story back to the mother so she would have a positive memory of her experience. I love to capture the beauty and rawness of the labour process and those first moments of a baby’s life. Such a precious memory to have.

My goal is that every woman I support or teach can find the best birth for her and her baby and look back at her birthing experience with a satisfied feeling of accomplishment and empowerment. Labour is preparation for parenthood and a good birthing experience gives a better start for baby and parents.

A quote that motivates me in my work is this one by Jane Wiedeman

“Giving birth should be your greatest achievement not your biggest fear”
